Grassroots Journalism Gets Local Boost
The Northwest Voice, covering northwest Bakersfield, Calif., is one of the most interesting new experiments in journalism today. When the editors say, "Share your voice," they're not kidding. Kudos.

I would share your enthusiasm, and I think this newspaper is a great idea, but it comes off to me like more of a community newsletter than a newspaper. In Bakersfield (about an hour away from my home), it works, because the neighborhood still has that close-knit feel to it. It's a great experiment, and I'd love to see what kind of technical issues arise from this. But I am reluctant to come to any conclusions just yet on "the face of journalism" -- again, because the paper reads and feels like a newsletter done on PrintShop.
I'm an avid supporter of newsletters, mind you. But perhaps I'm waiting with great anticipation to see the day when the general public has the burning desire to all become fiery investigative reporters... much like several of examples in your book of "average joes" challenging mainstream news to its face.
